South Carolina’s coast gives seafood a natural place at the center of Lowcountry eating. Shrimp, oysters and fish appear in everything from casual waterfront meals to ambitious restaurant menus.

South Carolina shrimp

Shrimp is particularly important to regional cuisine. You will encounter it in shrimp and grits, boils and simpler preparations where freshness matters more than elaborate technique.

Oysters

Oyster roasts are a classic coastal social tradition. Seasonality and harvesting conditions matter, so what is available changes throughout the year.

Ask what is local

A restaurant beside the ocean does not automatically mean every seafood item came from nearby waters. Ask what is locally or regionally sourced if that matters to you.

Try casual places too

Some memorable seafood meals come without white tablecloths. Fish shacks, markets and informal restaurants can be excellent stops during a coastal road trip.

I would combine one special seafood dinner with several simpler meals.

The Lowcountry is at its best when food still feels connected to marshes, boats and tides rather than simply arriving anonymously on a plate.
