Beaufort is one of the places I would choose when Charleston feels a little too busy. The city has historic architecture, water on almost every side and a slower Lowcountry rhythm that encourages walking rather than sightseeing at speed.
Start by the waterfront
Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park is an easy introduction. From there, walk into the historic district and let the streets provide the route.
Look beyond beautiful houses
Beaufort’s history is inseparable from slavery, the Civil War, Reconstruction and Gullah Geechee culture. The area’s preserved architecture becomes much more meaningful when those stories are included.
Use Beaufort as a base
The city is well positioned for exploring the surrounding Sea Islands, coastal nature and places such as Hunting Island.
Stay for dinner
Seafood and Lowcountry cooking give you a good reason not to leave immediately after the afternoon walk.
Beaufort does not need a packed itinerary. Its appeal comes from atmosphere, history and proximity to the marshes.
I would stay overnight if possible. An evening beside the water and a quiet morning walk show the city at its best.
