Greenville is one of South Carolina’s most enjoyable urban surprises. Its compact downtown combines restaurants, public spaces and a waterfall in a way that makes the city particularly easy to explore on foot.
Falls Park on the Reedy
The waterfall and surrounding park sit right in the city center. It is the obvious place to start, but do not treat it as a five-minute photo stop.
Walk downtown
Greenville rewards wandering. Shops, restaurants and cultural venues sit close enough together that you can leave the car behind for much of the visit.
Eat well
The city’s restaurant scene is a major part of its modern identity. Rather than arriving with every meal fixed, leave space for something you notice while walking.
Gateway to the Upstate
Greenville also makes a useful base for exploring northwestern South Carolina, where the landscape becomes hillier and outdoor recreation plays a larger role.
If your image of South Carolina is entirely beaches, plantations and Lowcountry marshes, Greenville provides an important contrast.
I would stay at least one night. The city is especially pleasant when there is no need to drive away immediately after dinner.
