Charleston is the South Carolina city I would give the most time on a first trip. Historic streets, waterfront scenery, food and architecture make it immediately attractive, but the city becomes more interesting when you look beyond the postcard version.
Walk the historic center
Charleston is best explored slowly. Walk the older streets, notice the architecture and courtyards, and leave room for unplanned stops rather than moving between attractions by car.
Understand the history
Charleston’s wealth and development were deeply connected to slavery and the plantation economy. Museums and historic sites that address enslaved people’s experiences provide essential context alongside the city’s preserved buildings.
Eat Lowcountry food
Shrimp and grits, seafood and other Lowcountry dishes make food part of the sightseeing. I would plan at least one meal around regional cuisine rather than simply choosing the nearest restaurant.
Stay into the evening
After day visitors disappear, walking becomes one of the pleasures of staying centrally.
Charleston can be beautiful and uncomfortable at the same time. That combination is worth engaging with. Give the city enough time to be more than pastel houses and horse-drawn carriages.
