Folly Beach is one of the easiest ways to add a proper beach day to a Charleston trip. It sits close enough to the historic city for a simple excursion but feels completely different once the ocean comes into view.
Beach first
The Atlantic is the main attraction. Walk, swim when conditions are appropriate, watch surfers or simply give yourself permission to do very little.
A casual beach town
Restaurants, bars and shops give Folly a relaxed personality. This is not a formal resort environment, which is part of its appeal.
Surfing and the ocean
Folly Beach is associated with surfing, but conditions vary. Beginners should consider local instruction and everyone should follow lifeguard advice and current warnings.
Combine carefully with Charleston
It is tempting to schedule historic Charleston in the morning and a full beach afternoon afterward. Traffic and parking can make that plan less effortless than it looks on a map.
I would give Folly enough time to settle into beach mode.
Charleston is about streets, buildings and stories. Folly Beach is where you can stop processing all of that for a few hours and watch the Atlantic instead.
